Roots and Beginnings
In 2013, after a few pints down the local pub; a group of gentleman decided to turn their dream into a reality by creating a business plan for their own brewery. None of them had experience within the brewery trade; however they knew that the majority of them had a taste for real ales and thought it would be a fun adventure. By March 2014 our doors were opened and the Flying Monk Brewery took flight. Thankfully the risk of turning a hobby into a business paid off and years on we have greater brand awareness and the company keeps going from strength to strength.
With the beautiful and varied country side of Wiltshire being home to the Flying Monk Brewery. We are situated on a working farm on the outskirts of Hullavington; our 25 barrel plant operates under the watchful and experienced eye of head brewer Nigel.
We take pride in preserving the countryside and minimising our environmental footprint. All of our malt and hops are sourced locally and once used for production of our fine ales; goes straight back onto the farm where we are based for cattle feed.
Even though we are still a relevantly young brewery; and with large competition within our home county. We are determined that our award winning and traditional ales will continue to grow, particularly as we have already brewed 15 different ales ranging in styles to suit all palates in the past four years.
Headed by one of our founding directors Iain Morrison and assisted by Martin Hender the former MD of Castle Coombe brewery. Our closely knit team of 8 staff make up the brewery, transport, accounts and sales teams.
With over 48 years between them our head brewer Nigel and assistant brewer Malcom are the pioneers of our fantastic new recipes along with making sure that the consistent high level of taste is maintained throughout all of our ales. Nigel S is also a key part of the brewery team; cleaning all casks which come back as well as helping to rack out and get retail customer orders ready.
Our transport team consisting of Dave and Tom are our front facing men when out making those special deliveries; travelling all over the South West their vans make it hard to miss them. Give them a wave when you see them.
All of our finances are looked after by one very special number cruncher Bekah; making sure that our books balance and giving our trade customers gentle reminders to pay for their deliveries.
Our sales team is made up of two lovely ladies; Steph and Gill. All who are happy to help both trade and retail customers. All come from a different sales/hospitality background and bring their skills together to make a strong sales team.
The Flying Monk family are all proud and enthusiastic about our products and as we all love the beer so much, we hope you will too.
The Flying Monk
Our brewery takes inspiration from our locally acclaimed hero.
In 1010 Elmer resided at Malmesbury Abbey and on a beautiful sunny day in Wiltshire after observing the Jackdaws circling the Abbey tower; he constructed wings and successfully travelled a distance of 200 metres.
The Flying Monk story is well known within the area and gives us inspiration for our ales names.
